The challenge

Effective irrigation management is essential for sustaining agriculture and ensuring water availability in rural areas. However, tracking and monitoring irrigation projects across multiple locations was a major challenge for Cauvery Niravari Nigam Limited, Bangalore.

Manual methods of water flow tracking, project progress monitoring, and infrastructure management led to delays, inefficiencies, and lack of real-time insights. To address these challenges, an advanced GIS-based project monitoring tool was needed to provide real-time visibility into irrigation projects and support data-driven decision-making.

Solutions Implemented

To enhance irrigation project management and transparency, we developed a GIS-based monitoring system that:

  • Digitized project tracking for water supply infrastructure.
  • Integrated real-time data monitoring to track water movement from barrages to reservoirs and village water tanks.
  • Enabled geographical mapping of irrigation networks with Google Maps API and REST services.
  • Provided automated alerts and notifications for stakeholders to identify issues and take timely action.
  • Improved decision-making through interactive dashboards and real-time analytics.
  • Offered a centralized system accessible by government agencies for streamlined reporting.

The system was developed using J2EE, JSF, Spring, Hibernate, and MySQL, ensuring scalability, security, and seamless integration.

Balancing AI innovation with ethical oversight is crucial as technology advances. AI governance ensures responsible deployment, mitigates risks like bias and security threats, and upholds regulatory compliance. By implementing transparency, human oversight, and adaptive policies, businesses can future-proof their AI strategies while fostering trust.

Key Outcomes

  • 115 Villages Benefited: Improved water supply efficiency across multiple locations.
  • 2.57 Lakh People Impacted: Enhanced water accessibility for rural populations.
  • 14 Km Rising Mains Monitored: Effective tracking of irrigation infrastructure.
  • 0.903 TMC Water Managed: Better water resource utilization and conservation.

With the GIS-based Project Monitoring System, irrigation authorities now have real-time insights into water distribution, enabling better planning, reduced wastage, and sustainable agricultural development.
